A readable place to learn Sudoku

When you’re learning Sudoku, a clear view of the grid helps you focus on the rules. You don’t need to be quick, and you don’t need arithmetic.

The numbers 1 to 9 are symbols you place without repeating them in a row, column, or box. The challenge is to work out where each number can go.

Start with one missing number

Find a row with eight numbers filled in. Write down which number from 1 to 9 is missing. Before placing it, check the column and the 3 × 3 box as well. All three rules must hold at the same time.

Learn one tool at a time

Many Sudoku apps include notes, hints, and error checking. These tools can help, but each adds something to learn. Begin with number entry and erasing. Try notes once you understand how to rule out a number.

Pick a readable app
